This is a rare and beautiful museum quality weighted club size Calvert boxwood and ebony chess set.
John Calvert was one of the top chess set makers in England from 1791 until his death in 1822, after which his widow Dorothy took over the Calvert business until her death in 1840. Many of the Calvert sets have the “Calvert 189 Fleet St” stamp. Some are unstamped but clearly attributable to Calvert, this set bares the stamp and is in great condition for its age. Whether your a chess player, enthusiast or just a collector this is a set that will grace anyone’s home.
