ITALIAN CASSONE CIRCA 1590 AND LATER

A 16th century and later Italian walnut cassone, with hinged lid with gadrooned edge. The front panel carved with central human mask, and floral motifs, outer acanthus detail is set above a gadrooned border, and sits on paw feet, this is a rare and beautiful find with intricate carving and excellent condition.

Dimensions: 163cm wide, 56cm deep, 60cm high.

Provenance: This is from the estate of Professor James Griffin, formerly White’s Professor of Moral Philosophy at Oxford University, and an Emeritus Fellow of Corpus Christi college, Oxford UK.
